The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to banish even the very concept of aristocracy from daily life led to a "revolutionization" of the appearance of playing cards, which became a vehicle for popularization: in this deck of cards published in Egalité-sur-Marne (Château-Thierry) by Bezu, the "numbers" were replaced by the new names of the days of the decades, and the figures called "Prime," "Second," and "Third" represent the Elements, the Seasons, and the Virtues. The five of diamonds heralds the Convention's decree reducing the hours of the day to 10, divided into 100 minutes instead of 60. Hand-colored woodcut, France 1790-1792.
