caption: PLAYING CARDS Decius (201 – 1 July 251), Hero of clubs, from a revolutionary deck of cards published by Antoine Lefer in Paris in the 1st year of the Republic. The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to oust even the mere concept of aristocracy from daily life lead to the ''revolution'' of the appearance of playing cards as well: the royal figures are replaced by prominent figures for civil and virtue: Kings become Wise men, Infantrymen become Heroes. Gaius Messius Quintus Trajan Decius, Roman emperor from 249 to 251, was a valiant soldier, an honest man and capable administrator, one of the greatest personalities in Roman history.
