caption: PLAYING CARDS Muzio Scevola (6th century BC), Hero of Spades, from a revolutionary deck of cards published by Antoine Lefer in Paris in the 1st year of the Republic. The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to expel even the mere concept of aristocracy from daily life lead to ''revolutionizing'' the appearance of playing cards as well; the royal figures are replaced by figures prominent in civil value and virtue: the Kings become the Wise Men, the Infantrymen the Heroes. Gaius Muzio Cordo was called Scaevola (left-handed) because he voluntarily sacrificed his right hand on the sacrificial fire, to punish it for having missed the target, killing an innocent man instead of the Etruscan commander Porsenna who was besieging Rome. Struck by his gesture, the Etruscan decided to agree to peace negotiations. Hand-colored woodcut, Paris 1792.
