caption: PLAYING CARDS Horatio (8 December 65 BC – 27 November 8 BC), Hero of diamonds, from a revolutionary deck of cards published by Antoine Lefer in Paris in the 1st year of the Republic. The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to expel even the mere concept of aristocracy from daily life lead to ''revolutionizing'' the appearance of playing cards as well; the royal figures are replaced by figures prominent in civil value and virtue: the Kings become the Wise Men, the Infantrymen the Heroes. Horace Flaccus Quintus, Roman poet and military tribune, was one of the most prominent personalities of Latin culture. Son of a freedman, he was educated in Rome and Athens, supported the republican cause of Marcus Junius Brutus and participated in the battle of Philippi (42 BC). Hand-coloured woodcut, Paris 1792.
