caption: PLAYING CARDS Brutus (c. 545 BC – 509 BC), Sage of Spades, from a revolutionary deck of cards published by Antoine Lefer in Paris in the 1st year of the Republic. The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to oust even the mere concept of aristocracy from daily life lead to the ''revolution'' of the appearance of playing cards as well; the royal figures are replaced by figures prominent in civil value and virtue: the Kings become the Wise Men, the Infantrymen the Heroes. Lucius Junius Brutus was the first consul of the Roman Republic (509 BC) with Collatinus, after the expulsion of Tarquinius Superbus; Voltaire was inspired by him in his work ''Brutus'' (1730).
