caption: PLAYING CARDS Cato (c. 234 BC – 149 BC), Essay of Diamonds, from a revolutionary deck of cards published by Antoine Lefer in Paris in the 1st year of the Republic. The new values of the French Revolution and the desire to oust even the mere concept of aristocracy from daily life also lead to the appearance of playing cards being ''revolutionised'': the royal figures are replaced by figures of prominence for civil and virtue: Kings become Wise men, Infantrymen become Heroes. Latin politician, orator and writer, Marco Porcio Cato advocated the destruction of Carthage; he was an upright example of the ancient and most genuine Roman customs, defended with the discipline he demanded from himself and from his collaborators.
