caption: Bertolt BRECHT (10 February 1898 – 14 August 1956), German playwright, poet, theatre director, writer and essayist, founder of epic theatre. In 1924 he settled in Berlin to direct the Deutsches Theater; in 1928 he had his first success with ''The Threepenny Opera'', with songs by Kurt Weill (1900 – 1950) with whom he collaborated until, in 1933, after the Reichstag fire, he left Germany. He emigrated first to Denmark and then to the United States. In 1947 he returned to Europe, to East Germany. His numerous works, the most famous of which are: ''Drums in the Night'' (1919); ''A Man Is a Man'' (1926); ''The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny'' (1928-29); ''Mother Courage and Her Children'' (1939); ''Mr. Puntila and His Servant Matti'' (1940); ''The Chalk Circle in the Caucasus'' (1944-45).
