caption: SAN ESPEDITO MARTIRE Head of the Roman Legion, according to popular devotion, would have been a 4th century Christian martyr. Numerous churches all over the world are dedicated to Sant'Espedito, the presence of his cult in places unrelated to the Catholic religion is frequent. This representation has also been adopted by syncretic worship since Voudun came into contact with the Christian religion practiced by the European colonists who had imported it into the Caribbean. The contamination between the two religions led in short to the assimilation of the Voudun idols with the fundamental figures of Christianity. In Haitian Voodoo the image of San Expedite is used to represent Baron Lakwa a spirit (Loa or Lwa) associated with death, cemeteries, children and sex. In New Orleans Voodoo the saint often represents Baron Samedi, the spirit of death. Chromos. Milan 1927
