Can Francesco della Scala known as Cangrande I (9 March 1291 - 22 July 1329), the best known exponent of the family, was a valiant leader and a skilled politician who extended the lordship to several cities in the Veneto region. Generous patron of the arts, he was a friend and protector of the great poet Dante Alighieri.
