title: ASSYRIAN WARRIORS

subject date: 2004-09-02

caption: ASSYRIANS "Assyrian Warriors with Shield and Archer." The central warrior, wearing a crested helmet, holds the inverted head of a decapitated enemy by his beard; the shield-bearer on the left carries a spear and a tall defensive weapon with which he supports the archers as they take aim and fire arrows during sieges; on the right, a female archer perhaps alludes to the figure of the legendary warrior queen Semiramis. Print from the collection of illustrated plates "Per la Storia dell'Abbigliamento," published individually from 1861 to 1890 in the "Münchener Bilderbogen" by Braun & Schneider of Munich, later collected in a volume. Germany, 19th century.
