caption: Emiliano ZAPATA (August 8, 1879 – April 10, 1919), a Mexican revolutionary, rebelled against the miserable conditions of Mexican peasants and became the spokesperson for the land hunger of the southern "peons," distributing the land seized from the landowners through guerrilla warfare. In 1911, he supported Francisco Madero's rebellion against the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz and allied himself with the northern revolutionary leader Pancho Villa against Venustiano Carranza; with him, he managed to occupy Mexico City (1914-15) but was unable to exercise political power and was assassinated by his enemies.
