caption: Cesare BECCARIA (15 March 1738 - 28 November 1794) was a Milanese jurist, philosopher, economist and man of letters. He came into contact with the Lombard illuminists and collaborated with Pietro Verri on the magazine ''il Caffè''. He wrote ''Dei delitti e delle Pene'' (On Crimes and Punishments) (1764) in which he denounced the degradation of the prison system and expressed himself against the death penalty. Portrait in oval at the age of 28, engraving by Carlo Faucci (1729 - 1784) based on a drawing by Antonio Perego. Italy, 1766.
