ANCIENT ROME Tivoli, Villa Adriana. The semicircular colonnade of the Canopus Pool. In the center of the colonnade, two tourists observe the swimming pool. Built starting from 117 AD by the emperor Hadrian, it is the most important and complex Villa left to us from Roman antiquity, larger than Pompeii. The Canopus is formed by a long water basin flanked by pergolas that ended in a monumental building conceived as a shell cave, decorated with niches, fountains and water features.
