subject date: 2004-10-07

caption: HERODOTUS (c. 484 BC – c. 425 BC), ancient Greek historian, considered by Cicero as the ''father of history''. Illuminated page from ''Histories'' (incipit of the first book), a work in which, as reported in the preface, ''Here Herodotus of Halicarnassus sets forth his research, so that the memory of things done by men may not fade with time; nor may the glory of great and marvelous works, accomplished by both Greeks and Barbarians, be obscured; and he will narrate among other things for what cause they fought one another.''. Translation by the classical philologist, writer and Italian philosopher Lorenzo Valla (1407 – 1 August 1457), one of the humanists who contributed most to the revival of Epicureanism in the Renaissance. In the top left panel appears an imaginary portrait of the Greek historian, below a clash between knights; miniaturist Francesco Rosselli (1448 – 1513). Edition dedicated to the patron Pope Nicholas V, in Latin, Italy first half of the 15th century.
