Maria GORETTI (16 October 1890 – 6 July 1902), venerated as a saint and martyr by the Catholic Church; her embalmed body, in the glass sarcophagus preserved in the Church dedicated to her in Nettuno RM. The young girl was canonized for having preserved her purity at the cost of death. She was in fact attacked with 14 punches of an awl, at the age of eleven, on 5 July 1902, by a young neighbor who wanted to threaten her, but whom she had resolutely rejected; she died the following day in hospital. Photograph, early 20th century.
