caption: REPUBLIC OF BERGAMO: Revolt of the Bergamo valley dwellers against the Jacobin resistance fighters of Longuelo. A rift between the city and the countryside over the Republic of Bergamo arose, driven by the revolution's irreligious nature, but also by profound differences in culture, traditions, interests, and sentiments. A counterrevolution was organized in the valleys, culminating in a firefight near Longuelo between republican citizens and pro-Venetian valley dwellers. The counterrevolution ended on April 20, 1797. This divergent sentiment toward the Republic of Bergamo was also driven by the economic policies implemented by the Municipality. The republic's economic initiatives benefited the citizens, but penalized the inhabitants of the province, who therefore opposed its rule. "Eternal memory to the courage of the people of Bergamo, attacked by an infamous troop that had rushed from the nearby valleys to threaten their liberty: they went to meet them, defeated them, and dispersed them. On that day the execrable victims of this memorable event exposed themselves under the Tree of Liberty." Watercolor print, Bergamo 1797.
