Antonio SALIERI Antonio SALIERI (18 August 1750 – 7 May 1825), Italian composer, musician and teacher of classicism. At 15, he went to Venice: he studied singing with Pacini and composition with Pescetti. Here he met L. Gassmann, master of the imperial chapel, who took him to Vienna and followed him like a son, also giving him an excellent musical and literary education. He succeeded Gassmann in 1774 as court composer and conductor of the imperial theatre. In 1788 he succeeded Bonno as master of the court chapel. He was president of the Tonkunstler Societat (society of widows and orphans of musicians, founded by Gassmann in 1771), until 1818. Alongside his activity as a composer he was well-known as a teacher: among his numerous students we remember L. Van Beethoven, F. Liszt , J.N.Hummel, F. Schubert.
