He occupied Goa in 1510, expanded and consolidated the Portuguese colonial empire, conquering the coasts of Malabar, Ceylon, and the Malacca Peninsula, a link between the Indian and Pacific Oceans; he penetrated the Red Sea and garrisoned Ormuz, where he built fortresses as military bases and trading posts.
