caption: CHRISTINE DE PISAN (1364 – 1430 ca.), French writer, poet and philosopher of Italian origin, the name ''Pizan'' derives from Pizzano, a town in the Bolognese Apennines where her family had its origins. Unhappily widowed and with three children under thirty, she decided not to remarry, took charge of her life by running a copying and miniature workshop; making use of the vast culture that her father had encouraged her to acquire, she began with success to compose her own appreciated works that allowed her to recover and lead (an extraordinary fact in her time) an independent life ''like a man''. Illuminated page from the manuscript ''Le Livre des Faits d'armes et de chevalerie'', France 15th century.
