caption: CHRISTINA OF SWEDEN (18 December 1626 – 19 April 1689), daughter of Gustav II Adolf, one of the greatest defenders of Protestantism during the Thirty Years' War, ascended the throne at the age of six; unexpectedly, in 1654 she converted to Catholicism and abdicated in favor of her cousin Charles Gustav who became King Charles X, taking refuge in Rome to avoid possible reprisals from the Protestants. In the papal capital she devoted herself to charitable works, art, music and theatre, encouraging the development of a cultural movement that shortly after her death, on 5 October 1690, led to the establishment in her memory of the Academy of Arcadia, of which the fourteen founding members proclaimed her ''Basilissa'', that is, inspiring patron. Painting by an anonymous artist with the royal symbols laid down, Italy 17th century.
