SAINT PIETRO CELESTINO (1209/1215 - 19 May 1296), born Pietro Angelerio, hermit from 1239 in an isolated cave on Mount Morrone and therefore also called Pietro da Morrone, was Pope of the Catholic Church from August 29 to December 13, 1294, date when he abdicated. It was the sixth time in the history of the Church that a Pope abdicated. Ripped to the ascetic life in old age by a conclave that had not been able in 27 months otherwise fill the vacancy, the purity and holiness qualities for which was accepted unanimously (and which had driven him to accept with humility the mammoth task) soon proved inadequate to run the varied ecclesiastical machine, and altrettata humbly returned the mandate to the new conclave.
