caption: I SANTI QUARANTA, according to the hagiographic tradition, were a group of Roman soldiers of the Legio XII Fulminata of Cappadocia, martyred for their Christian faith in 320, victims of the persecutions of Licinius unleashed since the year 316. By refusing to recant their faith Christian in spite of captivity and torture, were condemned by the prefect to be exposed naked on a frozen pond near Sebaste, in Armenia minor, during a winter night.
