caption: Michele SERVETO (September 19, 1511 - October 27, 1553) Spanish doctor, theologian, scientist, humanist and reformer. Of Jewish origins, he received Catholic education, but always maintained autonomy of thought. Not yet 20, he followed in Bologna, Juan de Quintana, who became a confessor of Charles V, in Italy was puzzled by the contradiction between the clarity of the clergy and the evangelical teachings; he was interested in the reformers' dispute, participated in the Diet of Augsburg, and moved for some time to Basel where he came in contact with Melantone and Ecolampadio. His concept of Baptism and of the Eucharist, along with his anti-trinitarian ideas expressed in the "Trinite Mistakes", "Dialogues on the Trinity" and "Restoration of Christianity," opposed both the Roman Church and the Reformers, and soon found itself in the view of the Inquisition, forced to repair in Paris under the false name of Michel de Villeneuve. Arrested for the first time in France, he escaped and the Inquisition, who had condemned him to the stake, had to burn it in effigy. Resettled in Geneva, he was again arrested and judged as a criminal by the Small Council, reformed mining; Calvino personally took charge of the indictment, and after a painful imprisonment he was burned alive as a heretic by the Calvinists, who had reiterated the condemnation of Catholics. In the background is the bullet. Colored engraving by 'Historia Michaelis Serveti' by Johann Lorenz Mosheim and Heinrich Von Allwoerden, 1727.
