caption: HISTORY OF THE PRESS Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (6 August 1844 – 30 July 1900), Duke of Edinburgh, and his new bride Maria Alexandrovna Romanova (17 October 1853 – 20 October 1920) arrived at Windsor for the Duchess's first meeting with Queen Victoria and the royal family. The news of the historic meeting between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, related by an unusual and stubborn love match that had involved the royals of the United Kingdom and Russia in long and complex negotiations, was widely reported by the press and illustrated (as was customary at the time) by cartoonist reporters. The sketches of the events were taken "live" and then elaborated more calmly, outlining the physiognomies and details; given the speed with which events unfolded, the images could appear different on the various newspapers (see 42051). The advent of photographic reporting put an end to these interpretative differences, offering, if anything, different perspectives.
