John Quincy ADAMS (July 11, 1767 – February 23, 1848), American politician, son of John Adams, second president of the United States, and himself 6th president from 1825 to 1829. His political path took him from the Federalist Party (until 1808) to the Democratic-Republican Party (1808 - 1828) with which he was elected president; from the split that he caused in the same party originated the National Republican Party (1828 - 1830), then the Anti-Masonic Party (1830 - 1834) and the Whig Party (1834 - 1848), from which the current Republican Party derives. He later served as chairman of the Committee on Manufactures, helping draft the Tariff Act of July 14, 1832, which was considered one of the causes that led to the American Civil War of 1861-1865. In 1839, he actively defended the slave rebels in the Amistad case before the United States Supreme Court, obtaining their acquittal. He is depicted in one of the first photographs of the new continent, probably from a lost daguerreotype. United States of America, 1847.
