The actions of the assault swimmers nicknamed "caimani del Piave", born as an elite of the Royal Navy selected from among the most skilled soldiers of the place and then enriched by the best elements from all over Italy, were irreplaceable in the period between the defeat of Caporetto and the events that then led to the defeat of the Austrians. In the battle of Vittorio Veneto, the third battle of the Piave, a nucleus of 5 daring under the command of Remo Pontecorvo heroically managed to pass the Piave and re-establish contact with the isolated armies, bringing back to the command information that contributed to the outcome of the battle.
