caption: GIROLAMO DA TREVISO the Younger (1498 - September 1544), Italian painter. After working in Venice and Bologna, he moved to England to the court of Henry VIII, for whom he painted a Protestant allegory in which the Pope was stoned by the Four Evangelists. He also served as a military engineer for the English king and was killed by a cannon shot during the siege of Boulogne. The oval portrait is enclosed in a frame decorated with allegorical figures and instruments of the arts. Colorized illustration based on a 16th-century woodcut, from the treatise 'Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects' by Giorgio Vasari (July 30, 1511 - June 27, 1574), second expanded and revised edition, Giunti, Florence 1568.
