caption: Gaetano SALVEMINI (1873-1957), historical and political writer from Bari. Socialist, Giolitti's opponent with whom he polemized in 'The Minister of the Underworld' (1910), was a deputy in the lists of fighters (1919). With the advent of fascism, he sided with Mussolini; he founded the periodical 'Non Mollare' with the Rosselli brothers; arrested, he succeeded in expatriate in France (1925) and in London and then in the USA. Among the founders of 'Justice and Freedom', he fought from the US for an anti-fascist, anti-communist and anti-monarchist policy. In 1949 he returned to the University of Florence. Positivist training then influenced by historical materialism, he was a meridionalist and federalist and a supporter of an innovative role of intellectuals. Photographic portrait, Italy 1919
