caption: Ferdinand MAGELLAN (17 October 1480 - 27 April 1521) Portuguese explorer and navigator. In the service of Charles V of Spain he opened the route of terrestrial circumnavigation by finding the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific that bears his name, in the deep South America. He fell in the battle of Mactàn, in the Philippines, but the expedition was nevertheless completed by his ship "Victoria", which returned on 6 September 1522 to the port of Seville, from which it had left on 10 August 1519. The new western route allowed Spain to carry out its trade with the Indies avoiding the African route which was under Portuguese rule. Colored engraving, 17th century
