In these salt pans which had historically occupied convicts and forced laborers, many Italian emigrants worked (willing to accept lower wages than the French) and here, in August 1893, serious riots broke out for salary reasons, with the aggression and massacre of Italian workers by the inhabitants united with the local workers.
